Using the forum

The forum is provided free for customers of the Interactive Watercolour CD. PaintDoodles.com reserves the right to terminate the forum without notice.

Membership of the forum has, at present, not been restricted to Interactive Watercolour  customers so that responses to questions and discussions can be as wide and informative as possible.

You don't need to register as a member if you just want to read the posts and view images in the forum.

To conserve space and free up usernames, registered users who have not made any posts will be periodically deleted. If you return to make a post and find that you are no longer listed, just join again.

If you have registered in the forum and find that you are unable to log on, deleting the cookies in the temporary internet files on your computer will usually put things right.

Some existing members use digital alterations to illustrate how a painting could be improved. If you don't want your posted paintings altered in this way, please include a note in your signature (editable in your profile) such as: 'I prefer that my paintings are not digitally altered' or simply 'No digital alterations'. Alternatively, if you are happy to accept digital alterations, this could be indicated in your signature.

What can I post?

We request that members use appropriate language and do not post drawings or paintings depicting nudity. The forum membership is from a wide range of cultures, and may also be viewed by children so please do not post material that other visitors may find offensive.

If a painting has been derived from teaching or copyright material, please make reference to the source and/or original artist. For your own protection it is advisable to obtain permission from the publisher of such material before posting your own version of an Artists painting. Members take full responsibility for such postings.

Please do not post images that belong to someone else unless you have obtained permission to do so. There is no need in the paintdoodles forum to make any reference to material derived from the Interactive Watercolour CD unless you wish to do so.

Please respect the copyright of any paintings, drawings, photographs or graphics posted in the forum by members. If you would like to have a go at a members painting or photo, please ask first. Most members will usually agree to this where it is for the sole purpose of your own education. The Monthly Joint Projects Forum will specifically give permission for the use of a photograph.

Please remember that the purpose of the forum is to help members learn to paint. Those members with abilities are encouraged to freely give help to those on their quest to improve, with particular attention to those just starting out. The forum should not be used as: a personal gallery; for a personal agenda other than learning to paint or helping others to learn to paint nor should it be used solely to seek praise.

Any posts which are considered to be inappropriate, deliberately argumentative or in bad taste will be deleted. Members persistently offending will have their membership of the forum suspended.

Advertisements for web sites (other than registered members sites), supplies or other services which are not in answer to a post question will be deleted.

Similarly, memberships or posts created for the sole purpose of advertisement of web sites or supplies will be terminated. (If you have an art related web site and would like a reciprocal link in the Links/Partners section of Paintdoodles just send an email from the menu at left)

Posting

You have to be logged in to make a post. You can edit or delete your own posts by logging in and clicking the Post options link and selecting an option from the drop down list. You can only delete your own posts but only when no one has posted after you.  To make a post, Click the Post Reply Buttonor go to the end of the thread and use the Quick Reply editor.

To start a new topic use the Topic Options link and select an option from the drop down list in the relevant forum.

Viewing Posts

Posts can be seen by selecting pages in that topic from the top of the topic page.

Inserting Images into the Forum.

There are two ways to insert images into your forum post. From an image already on the web at your web site or by uploading to your personal upload folder at Paintdoodles.  Both are accessed by pressing  the   icon at the top of the Full Post Reply box which is accessed either by selecting a new topic. In an existing topic, it can be selected by pressing abutton in the thread or the  icon in the Quick Reply box which appears after the last post in the thread. (The insert image feature is not available in the Quick reply editor)

This will open the Image properties dialog box.

To insert an image from your computer, press the Browse Button and follow the on screen prompts.
This will upload the image into your upload folder and details of the image will be shown in the File name box . The image will stay in your upload folder until you choose delete it. (
See deleting an image). Images must be below 50kbytes or they will not upload. You can preview the image in the preview box by clicking on its file name. With the image in the preview box, click OK to insert the image in the post. There is 10MBytes of space in your upload folder. Please use the space only for images used in the forum.

To insert an image from your web site: enter the full URL to the image in the Image URL Box. Resize and position the image, if necessary, using the controls above the preview box. An Alternative text for the image can be entered. The text will show when the viewer does a mouse over the image in the forum or when no images are displayed due to the viewers browser settings.

TIP: If the picture is showing in your web space, you can right click on the image and selecting ‘properties’ will give you the full URL of that image. Just highlight and copy.  When you are at the point where the Insert Image pop-up box appears, just paste the URL but make sure only ONE ‘http://’ is showing.

Important – file names should be lower case with no spaces and only:  - (minus) or _ (underscore) characters.  Many servers do not recognize caps, spaces or special characters in file names and using them may cause your image not to show.

About Images:

The first thing you must do is get your image onto your computer either by way of a scanner, a smartcard / smartmedia / memory stick device or directly from a digital camera. This instructional assumes you already know how to go about performing that task. For those who do not know how to go about this, it’s best to obtain that information through the input device instruction manual. Directions can be different depending on device and many times the manufacturer of the device being used.

Once you have your image, then it is important to “prep” it for showing on the Internet. There are a number of programs to use for this such as Adobe Photoshop Elements, Jasc Paint Shop Pro, etc. You may need to “correct” your image with regards to being too dark, too light, out of focus, colour correction and so on ……… refer to graphic’s program instructions for taking care of this type of prep work.

Produce the correct image size for showing on the Forum.

Set your image editing software to measure the image in pixels. Use Resize to reduce your image as follows:

image sizes are best kept to no larger than 500 pixels wide and 400 pixels high for landscape format….vice versa for portrait.

Use a resolution of 72ppi (pixels per inch)

Save photographic type images (pictures of your paintings) as .jpg files and line art as .gif files.

With jpg files, use a compression which will reduce the file size to 50kbytes or less whilst maintaining the picture quality.

If your photographic software has a 'Save for web' facility this will usually do a more efficient job of producing a good quality picture at minimum size.

There's also a tutorial for sizing images in Irfanview here. Irfanview is a free image editing software package.

Deleting Images from your upload folder

When logged in, click the link to Member control panel on the left. Select file manager. Select the image you want to delete and click the delete file icon . Don't forget that if you delete a file, it will not be displayed in your posts any longer.
